"The secret of life was Breath. That was what I always wanted my words to do, to Breathe." -Anais Nin
From her earliest memory, Evan just wanted to write. And after graduating Phi Beta Kappa, Summa Cum Laude from UCLA with a BA in English literature and creative writing, that is exactly what she did.
In 2005, Evan published her first book, UM, LIKE...OM: A GIRL GODDESS'S GUIDE TO YOGA-- a fun, funny, and inspiring self-help tome for tween and teenage girls. (Little, Brown, & Co., 2005).
But Evan's journey from aspiring writer to published author and girl "guru" was not a simple one.
At the age of 18, Evan awoke one morning with what she believed to be an eye infection. By the end of that same day, Evan had completely lost sight in her left eye. She was diagnosed with a virus known as Optic neuritis- often a precursor to Multiple Sclerosis. After being examined by several Neurologists, Evan and her family decided to forego recommendations for heavy-duty steroid medication, due to their powerful side effects. Instead, Evan sought the help of a well-known holistic physician, Dr. Soram Khalsa. This decision changed the course of Evan's life forever: Dr. Khalsa prescribed, among other therapies, that Evan begin practicing yoga.
After one yoga class with Guru Singh, Evan's first and primary yoga instructor at Yoga West, in Los Angeles, she was hooked. Miraculously, Evan regained her sight after 12 weeks. Yoga had cured her and she had discovered an entirely new way of life.
In 1997, Evan became a certified yoga instructor. She studied Kundalini yoga under Guru Singh and the 3HO Organization and completed Ana Forrest's yoga teacher training in Santa Monica, CA. In 2001, after writing script coverage for various production companies and working as a staff writer at US WEEKLY magazine, Evan finally took the leap to full time yoga instructor and freelance writer.
Determined to help others overcome the same insecurities she faced as a teenager and young adult, Evan quickly made a name for herself as a leading yoga instructor for teenage girls in Los Angeles. Her book, UM, LIKE...OM... has been read by thousands, won the NY Library Award for teen non-fiction, and has awakened and inspired girls around the world to use the ancient practice of yoga as a way to chill out, get in touch with their inner selves, and empower their lives. In a world addicted to beauty, thinness, and celebrity, Evan encourages girls to get in touch with what's on the inside: to start a revolution from within.
Evan is a member of the International Associate of Yoga Teachers (IAYT), and a Registered Yoga Alliance Teacher. When she is not yoga-ing or meditating, Evan can be found blogging at spiritandsole.net, working on her forthcoming Young Adult novel, or romping around with her sweet and spirited 3 year old daughter, Emerson Eden.
